Berlin’s interview magazine mono.kultur has recently launched its online store where you can get hands on back issues, artist collaborations and some nice clothing. If you haven’t heard from them so far, the boxed set is the way to go.

The seemingly innocent copse of Robinia, a patch of waste landscape colonised by nature right in the heart of Berlin, has born the brunt of history and been neglected by it in turn. Between 1933 and 1945, it was the heart of the Third Reich and home to the headquarters of the Gestapo and SS. After the war, the area was erradicated and gradually turned into a piece of abandoned wasteland, and from 1961 the Berlin Wall ran along the northern edge of the then levelled terrain. In 1987, the site was landscaped and opened to the public.

With his book Topographie, Berlin based photographer Andreas Gehrke signifies the atrocities that were directed from this very place nearly eighty years ago.

The Bicycle Portraits project was initiated by Stan Engelbrecht (Cape Town, South Africa) and Nic Grobler (Johannesburg, South Africa) early in 2010. Whenever they can, they’re on the lookout for people who use bicycles as part of their everyday work, to meet and photograph. Being avid cyclists themselves, this project is as much an investigation into South African bicycle culture as it is an excuse for them to ride their bikes and take photographs. Via

The picture of the series “War Is Personal”, winner in the category “Contemporary Issues Stories” by Eugene Richards shows Sgt. José Pequeño and his mother. Pequeño suffered a devastating brain injury from a grenade tossed into his Humvee in March 2006 in Iraq. Helped by a grant from National Geographic Magazine, Richards was traveling around the U.S. in 2009 to work on a series of stories mainly about veterans and their families.

It’s been a while since I read a comic book but when a friend introduced me to Brian Wood‘s DMZ I was hooked from the start: Imagine a 2nd American Civil War with Manhattan as a demilitarized zone between the two warring parties, visualized by the stunning art of Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli and you’ll get the idea.

70 years after the Reichskristallnacht it is still a tightrope walk to publish a book about the corporate identity of the National Socialist party. For years designer Andreas Koop looked into this awkward subject and managed to make a factual approach with his book NSCI. Read the interview (German).
